Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy
Pelvic floor physical therapy is a specialty area focusing on the rehabilitation of dysfunction involving the muscles, connective tissues, reproductive organs and nerves located within the pelvis. It is performed by a physical therapist with specialized training in the assessment and treatment of pelvic floor dysfunction including conditions related to the control of the bladder and bowels, sexual dysfunction, organ prolapse and pelvic pain.
A pelvic health physical therapist will perform an external assessment and sometimes assess internally as needed to create an individualized treatment plan to restore function. We use the principles of physical therapy to provide a structured, effective and safe reconditioning of the pelvic floor using interventions such as manual therapy, neuromuscular re-education, bladder/bowel retraining and therapeutic exercise prescription.
